U16 Spitfires in high flight
Head coach Matt Zuccato and the Windsor Jr. Spitfires exited this weekend’s Under 16 level Toronto Titans Early Bird Hockey Tournament with an ultra impressive record of 3-1-1 in five games.
Windsor’s only loss came in the Sweet 16 playoff round, a 4-3 overtime setback to the powerhouse, number one ranked Vaughan Kings.

During the round robin portion of the prestigious event, the Jr. Spitfires finished first in one of the eight six-team divisions with a record of 3-0-1 to earn a spot in the Sweet 16.
The top two teams in each of the eight divisions advanced to the Sweet 16. But somehow, the Jr. Spitfires, who won their division, had to face another first place team in top ranked Vaughan instead of playing one of the teams that finished second. Huh? Self serving Toronto tournament rules, perhaps?
At any rate, aforementioned Jr. Spitfires head coach Matt Zuccato noted the overall compete level of his U16 team throughout the tournament in a message to Hockey News Windsor.
The Jr. Spitfires had wins over the Peterborough Jr. Petes, Mississauga Rebels and Whitby Wildcats and came away with a tie against the Reps Hockey Club before losing the playoff heart breaker to Vaughan.
Through the five games, Roman Shtefan sparked the U16 Jr. Spitfires on the offensive side with five goals, two assists, seven points. Carter Trudell also contributed in a big way with three goals, two assists, five points while Cooper Disher, Gavin Diemer and defenseman Liam Fitzmaurice all had four points.
