Spits salvage single point

A loss is easier to accept when it at least results in something. As in a point. The Spitfires overcame a 3-1 third period deficit to score a pair of power play goals to force overtime before falling to the visiting Oshawa Generals 4-3 in the extra frame.

At the end of it all the Spitfires were able to give some thanks for a single point in today’s Thanksgiving Day matinee match before a shade over 5,000 fans at the WFCU Centre. And the point gives Windsor 19 of them and keeps it atop the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League with a record of 9-1-1.

Carson Woodall

On a day when several Spitfires seemed sluggish and a step behind the Generals, there were a few on the home side who had jump, especially forwards Ethan Belchetz and A.J. Spellacy and assist making defenseman Carson Woodall. And Spitfires goalie Michael Newlove — who assisted on one of the Windsor goals — deserved a better fate as all four of Oshawa’s goals included a fortuitous bounce in favour of the Generals.

Offensively, Belchetz, Spellacy and Jack Nesbitt scored for Windsor, two of which were assisted by Woodall.

A local product and former 10th round pick by the Spitfires, the 19-year old Woodall leads the Spitfires in scoring this season with 15 points — all of them assists. Always a dependable performer, Woodall has shown an upgrade to his game thus far this season following a favourable showing as a free agent invitee at this year’s National Hockey League training camp of the Edmonton Oilers.
