Spitfires sweep the road

Windsor Spitfires have made it back to the top of the standings of the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League by virtue of successive road triumphs this weekend.

The Spitfires currently are a point up on the Flint Firebirds with a game in hand. Windsor now has a record of 29-9-5, good for 63 points.

Spitfires 3, Erie Otters 2. Defenseman turned right winger Anthony Cristoforo scored twice and Ethan Belchetz tallied the other in front of ace goalie Joey Costanzo, who won his 22nd game of the season.

Spitfires 5, Brampton Steelheads 2. Windsor overpowered the home side, out shooting Brampton by a 40-19 margin. Captain Liam Greentree, recently acquired Nathan Villeneuve, Ethan Belchetz, Ethan Garden and defenseman Conor Walton all scored solo goals for the Spitfires. Villeneuve (in photo at left) now has four goals in five games for the Spitfires since being obtained from the Sudbury Wolves at the OHL trade deadline.  Rookie backup Michael Newlove made 17 saves for his seventh win of the season.
