Spitfires are hitting stride
They are starting to blend as a team that added three veteran players at the Ontario Hockey League trade deadline in order to keep pace with the other Western Conference contenders.
Winners of three straight games and with a record of 4-0-1 in their past five outings, the Windsor Spitfires are starting to hit stride as the stretch run of the ’25-26 OHL season looms.
Spitfires 7, Saginaw 1. The Spitfires smoked the Spirit before a Family Day Monday matinee gathering of 6,163 at the WFCU Centre. The home team looked smooth and in sync from the outset en route to improving its record to 36-12-7. Captain Liam Greentree gunned a pair of goals to give the National Hockey League prospect of the New York Rangers 27 tallies on the season. Cole Davis, Jack Nesbitt, defensemen Carson Woodall and Andrew Robinson and rookie forward Johnny McLaughlin — with his third goal in as many games and eighth on the season — rounded out the Windsor scoring. Overage goalie Joey Costanzo made 19 saves for his 27th win of the season.
Three team race. Kitchener Rangers lead the Western Conference standings with 80 points followed by the Spitfires and the Flint Firebirds with 79 apiece. Flint has played one more game than both Kitchener and Windsor.
Up next. Windsor will go head to head with both teams this week. The Spitfires will be at Kitchener on Friday and home to Flint in a 4 p.m. showdown on Sunday at the WFCU Center.
