Silver Sticks for Tecumseh
There is more to come from this nest of 2011 birth year performers. It is on to the next round of Silver Sticks tournament play for the Under 15 rep level Tecumseh Eagles of the Bluewater Hockey League.
An overtime loss in the U15 rep level championship game in the Silver Sticks Regional Hockey Tournament held on the weekend in the nearby Strathroy community of Watford was enough for Tecumseh to be awarded a berth at next month’s Silver Sticks International event to be staged in Port Huron, Michigan.
Tecumseh head coach Jeff Smith relayed the following message to Hockey News Windsor.
“One of the tournament directors came into our dressing room after the (regional championship) game to tell the boys that we are into the next round of the Silver Sticks in Port Huron. He said that we were one of the classiest teams he has ever seen at this type of tournament. He also said our parents were amazing … so hats off to them and thanks so much for all of the support,” said Smith.
Smith paid further tribute to his team, which went 2-0-1 in the round robin — the only loss being a 1-0 overtime setback to the London Mustangs — before blanking the Southwest Admirals 7-0 in the semi-finals and then losing 3-2 in OT to the Kent Cobras in the title tilt.
“Myself and the rest of the coaching staff were so proud of the boys’ effort,” Smith continued. “We battled through illness and injury on the weekend and almost won the damn thing. The best is yet to come … we can’t wait to see this team do some amazing things in 2026.”
The play of goalies Christian Zgomba and Owen Whitehead was one of the highlights for Tecumseh at the Watford regionals.
Zgomba won both of his starts in the round robin before helping to take the Eagles to overtime in the championship game. As for Whitehead, he did not allow a single goal in regulation time through his two starts. Whitehead was in the Tecumseh net for the 1-0 overtime loss to London and recorded the blank in a 7-0 verdict over the Southwest Admirals in the semi finals.
