Essex ousts Amherstburg
Essex 73’s are headed to the third round of the Provincial Jr. Hockey League playoffs. Three straight wins by Essex gave the 73’s a four games to one series triumph over the upstart Amherstburg Admirals.
The clincher for the 73’s came on Friday with a 6-2 home ice decision over Amherstburg before more than 600 fans at the Essex Centre Complex.
Amherstburg, which finished fifth in the West Stobbs Division during the regular season — a distant 39 points back of no. 1 seed Essex — had the series tied at a game apiece before the 73’s rallied with successive 8-0, 6-2, 6-2 victories to close out the best of seven set.
Essex swept the lowly Walpole Island Wild in four straight in the opening round of the playoffs while Amherstburg upended the no. 4 seed Mooretown Flags four games to two.
