Admirals lower the Flags

Amherstburg Admirals have sent the favoured Mooretown Flags packing for the season. The Admirals capped a first round, best of seven playoff upset in the West Stobbs Division of the Provincial Jr. Hockey League on Tuesday with a 5-4 home ice overtime victory over the Flags.

Rory Sandison’s overtime goal propelled Amherstburg to the series clincher after Mooretown had tied the game with just over a minute to go in the third period.

The triumph gave Amherstburg the best of seven series four games to two. The Admirals, with a record of 15-21-6, had finished in fifth place in the Stobbs Division during the regular season, nine points back of the fourth place Flags, who had a 22-19-1 record.

Stefan Djordjevic scored a pair of regulation time goals to trigger the Admirals attack. Drew Booker and Freddie McCrory also tallied for Amherstburg while Harrow product Cale Marontate dished out three assists.

The two tallies gave Djordjevic seven goals in the six game series. Booker and Marontate also had seven points apiece for head coach Zack Gervais and his upstart Admirals.

A crowd of 355 fans took in the closely contested Game 6 match at the pristine Libro Credit Union Centre in Amherstburg.
