Spitfires soaring at 6-1-1
A season ago the Spitfires finished 19th among the 20 teams of the Ontario Hockey League with a record of 18-42-8. But thus far in the early going of the ’24-25 season the Spitfires have reversed course and have a first place record of 6-1-1 through eight games.
The latest triumph for Windsor was a 5-2 drubbing of the visiting Oshawa Generals on Thanksgiving Monday. The Spitfires spotted the Generals an early 2-0 lead before scoring an overwhelming 5-2 win in which Windsor outshot Oshawa 50-17. It was a dominant effort by the home team in a score that flattered the visitors.

The Spitfires are now 3-0-0 on the home ice of the WFCU Center and are 3-1-1 away from Windsor ahead of two more road games this weekend, Friday at Guelph and Saturday at Owen Sound. Windsor has outscored its opponents 46-25 in the eight games to date.
ICE CHIPS: Captain Liam Greentree had a goal and three assists to spark the Spits to the win over Oshawa. Greentree now has three goals, 13 assists, 16 points and has been on the scoresheet in all seven games that he has played in. His 16 points are tied for the OHL scoring lead with Porter Martone of the Brampton Steelheads … Rookie import Ilya Protas, overages Ryan Abraham and Noah Morneau and defenseman Conor Walton with his first of the season also found range for Windsor in the victory over Oshawa. Protas now has six goals on the season, Abraham has five and Morneau has four … A hulking defender with a 2006 birth date who attended the recent National Hockey League main camp of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the aforementioned Conor Walton is one of a good number of OHL mainstays who have developed in the under-rated Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. Walton spent the full ’22-23 season in the NOJHL playing for head coach Jason Rapcewicz and the small town Espanola Paper Kings … Seasoned Spitfires goalie Joey Costanzo is one of the best in the OHL thus far with a record of 6-0-0 to go with a 2.33 goals against average and .920 save percentage …
