Windsor Spitfires can expect to see an upgraded version of the Soo Greyhounds on Wednesday when the Western Conference foes face off in a 7:05 p.m. start at the WFCU Center.

Marco Mignosa

When the two teams first played back on October 3 in Windsor, the Spitfires whitewashed the Greyhounds 5-0 to send the boys from the Soo to their third straight loss to begin the ’24-25 regular season. But since then, the Greyhounds have won seven of nine games and thus take a record of 7-5-0 into Wednesday’s game versus the 10-1-1 Spitfires, who have the best record among the 20 teams of the Ontario Hockey League.

In the past week alone, the Greyhounds have added a full line of high end players without giving up anything — right winger Marco Mignosa, centre Owen Allard and left winger Noel Nordh.

The major boost came with the return from injury of Mignosa and the reassignment of the overage Allard and the import rookie Nordh, both from the minor pro ranks. Nordh had a goal and two assists in his recent OHL debut with the Greyhounds. Mignosa has a goal and two assists and Allard has a goal and an assist in the two games they have now played.

ICE CHIPS: If there is a major difference between the Spitfires and the Greyhounds it is on the power play. Windsor’s PP is clicking at a league-best 34.1 per cent while the Soo is functioning at a mere 9.8 per cent rate, which is 19th among the 20 teams of the OHL … Spitfires captain Liam Greentree leads the OHL in scoring with seven goals, 19 assists, 26 points … Windsor has two players who have nine goals apiece to lead the Spitfires: Jack Nesbitt and Ilya Protas … A pair of second year forwards who are prospects for the 2025 National Hockey League draft lead the Greyhounds in scoring. Brady Martin has five goals, seven assists, 12 points and Travis Hayes has six goals, four assists, 10 points … The Soo has three Windsor area products on its roster in veteran defenseman Andrew Gibson from LaSalle, rookie forward Erik Muxlow from Tecumseh and rookie defenseman Keegan Gillen from Amhertsburg … Joey Costanzo of the Spitfires is the top goalie in the OHL with a record of 9-0-0 to go with a 1.89 goals against average and .936 save percentage. The Greyhounds can counter with the 1-2 twin towers duo of 6-foot-5 Charlie Schenkel and 6-foot-4 Landon Miller. Schenkel is an overage and Miller, who is two years younger, is a 2024 NHL draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings … Both teams boast two of the best radio play-by-play men in the OHL: Steve Bell of the Spitfires and Gerry Liscumb Jr. of the Greyhounds …
