Captain Liam Greentree continues to sear the score sheet for the Spitfires. The skilled skater scored once and assisted on three others today to help Windsor to a 6-4 New Year’s Eve afternoon victory over the Flint Firebirds. Greentree, who many feel should be playing for Team Canada at this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships, is one of the top point getters in the Ontario Hockey League as a 2006 birth year forward.

Greentree, a first round pick by the Los Angeles Kings at the 2024 National Hockey League draft, now has 25 goals, 35 assists, 60 points in 35 games for the Spitfires this season. He is second only to Michael Misa — another Team Canada snub — among OHL scorers this season.

With today’s win over Flint, the Spitfires maintain their standing as the second best team in the Ontario Hockey League with 55 points from a rousing record of 26-7-3. Flint falls to 16-17-2 with the loss.

Besides Greentree, 2008 birth year rookies Ethan Garden and Ethan Belchetz and fellow forwards Noah Morneau, Ilya Protas and Jack Nesbitt also scored for the Spitfires, who were outshot 32-16 by the visiting Firebirds and got 28 saves from Joey Costanzo, who won his league-best 22nd game of the season.

Cole Żurawski, Nathan Aspinall, Jimmy Lombardi and Connor Clattenburg scored for Flint, which trailed 5-0 after the first period but rallied to make a game of it.

More than 6,400 fans took in today’s game at the WFCU Center in Windsor.
