Surging Spits soar to 10-5-3
A sluggish start to the ’26-27 Ontario Hockey League season has turned around for the Spitfires. Since posting a subpar record of 3-5-2 through their first 10 games of the season, the Spitfires have gone 7-0-1 in their last eight outings.
Windsor’s most recent wins have come on an Eastern Ontario road swing to Peterborough and Ottawa.
Spitfires 4, Peterborough 3. Defenseman Andrew Robinson popped in a power play goal at 16:53 of the third period to provide the margin of victory for the Spitfires. Local lad Thanasi Marentette (in photo at left), Michal Svrcrek and Max Brocklehurst also found range for Windsor and rookie defenseman Jesse Debruyn had a pair of power play assists. Michael Newlove won his fifth straight start to improve his record to 6-4-3.
Newlove And DiPietro. Goalie Michael Newlove had his shutout string snapped at 9:52 of the first period in the win over the Petes. According to Hockey News Windsor stats supplier David Harrison, Newlove went 193 minutes and 33 seconds without allowing a goal. According to Harrison, Michael DiPietro — now having a standout National Hockey League rookie season with the Boston Bruins — still holds the all-time Spitfire goal-less streak at 209 minutes, 23 seconds from back in the 2016-2017 season.

Spitfires 5, Ottawa 4. Another late goal lifted the Spitfires to a road win. Anthony Cristoforo clicked for his eighth of the season as the Spitfires slipped past the 67’s. John McLaughlin paced the Spitfires with two goals — giving him nine on the season — while Michal Svrckek and rookie Ty Bergeron (in photo at left) also scored for Windsor. Since going point-less in his first 10 games of the season, Bergeron — who is an intriguing prospect for the 2027 NHL Draft — has four goals, four assists, eight points in his last eight outings. Meanwhile, rookie goalie Jake Windbiel made 21 saves to lift his record to 4-1-0 on the season. Windbiel made a highlight-reel stop in the final minute to preserve the Windsor win.
Up Next. The Spits will conclude their three game Eastern block road trip on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match against the Kingston Frontenacs. Steve Bell will provide the play by play yell and tell on radio station AM 800 CKLW.
