Spitfires sign Sam Wathier
As a well worn old saying goes, better late than never. Well, two years after being picked by Windsor in the fifth round of the 2024 Ontario Hockey League priority selections draft, 6 foot 4 defenseman Sam Wathier has committed to the Spitfires ahead of the ’26-27 season.
The towering American born defender with a 2008 birth date has spent the past two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program.
“This is a big signing for us,” said Spitfires general manager Billy Bowler. “With where he has played the last two years, for him to come and join us, it could not have come at a better time. Sam is a big kid who can cover a lot of ice and defend extremely well.”
Wathier (in photo below) represents the third off season signing of rookie defensemen by the Spitfires, the others being Drake Gram from the 2024 OHL draft and Jesse Debruyn from the 2025 process.
