Team Canada coaches
Ontario Hockey League coaches Dave Cameron of the Ottawa 67’s and Chris Lazary of the Memorial Cup champion Saginaw Spirit will lead Team Canada at the 2025 World Jr. Hockey Championships that are slated for Ottawa.
A career coach, the ageless Cameron returns to take the reins as head coach after leading Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2022 WJC.
Cameron has served as head coach of the 67’s for the past three seasons, leading Ottawa to three straight playoff appearances and winning OHL and Canadian Hockey League coach of the year awards in 2022-2023.
Cameron previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League and five seasons before that with the Ottawa Senators as both head coach and assistant. And before that, the well respected Cameron was an OHL head coach spanning several seasons with the Soo Greyhounds (1997 to 1999) and the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors (2000 to 2004, 2009-2010.)
The well decorated Cameron was also an assistant with the St. John’s Maple Leafs (1999-2000) and head coach of the Binghamton Senators (2004 to 2007) of the American Hockey League. Internationally, Cameon has won four medals at the WJC, including silver and gold as head coach in 2011 and 2022 and gold and silver as an assistant in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
Scott Salmond, who is the senior vice president of high performance and hockey operations for Hockey Canada, commented on the hiring the 65-year old Cameron as the Team Canada head coach for the 2025 World Juniors.
“Dave has won two gold medals at the World Juniors and has proven to be an excellent leader of Canada’s National Junior Team … and we are excited to have him return to coach our team as we look to reclaim gold in the nation’s capital this year,” said Salmond.
Over to Lazary as the appointed Team Canada assistant, he has been a successful head coach In Saginaw for the past five seasons after parts of three seasons as an associate coach with the Spirit and in two seasons prior that, as an assistant with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting.
